The Hamsa Hand

Blessed at the March Equinox

At Harvest Gold Gallery we made this charm to join others on a bracelet for someone who is now 4 and half.  Her parents said they wanted a charm that would symbolize how much they loved her "helping hands".
While reading newsletters, months after we made the charm, on this day, the last day of February, I came across a picture of a hand charm very similar to this one with this quote and it seemed perfect for sharing today.

"The Hamsa Hand, Hand of Fatima, Hand of Mary, of Miriam, Hand of God."

"The Hamsa has always been associated with a female entity.  To the Levantine Christians the Hamsa is known as the Hand of Mary, to the Jews it's the Hand of Miriam, sister of Moses and Aaron, and Moslems know it as the Hand of Fatima, the daughter of Prophet Muhammad.  The Hamsa symbol offers all protection from malevolence and misfortune and is widely used to this day as an amulet on baby carriages, stroller and cribs.  It is often seen adorning little girl's hair."
